Milwaukee’s Atomic Secret

Milwaukee’s industrial might played a large role in the development of the Manhattan project. Starting in late 1942, Allis-Chalmers received more than sixty orders regarding parts for the atomic bomb. They were contracted to make equipment that was able to harness the bombs immense power. This includes equipment meant to help with gaseous diffusion, the electromagnetic process that separates Uranium, and large power plant equipment used to extract Plutonium from Uranium. Both executives and employees at the company were in in the dark in regard to the true purpose of what they were manufacturing.
